Can you watch IPTV on a Roku?

What makes Roku different from a Fire TV or Android box?

Roku only runs apps from its own store, and that store carries very few proper IPTV players. Most Fire TV Sticks and every Android TV box are built on Android, so they can install Android IPTV apps. Roku runs its own system, Roku OS, which accepts nothing from outside the Roku Channel Store (newer menus call it the Streaming Store).

Two old tricks no longer help. Roku switched off private channel codes in February 2022, so the codes printed in older guides do nothing now. Roku's developer mode is still there, but it is meant for app makers testing their own code, holds one app at a time and is not a safe way to run software from strangers. We do not recommend it.

That leaves two paths on the Roku itself: a simple M3U player from the store, or sending the picture from another device.

Which methods actually work on a Roku?

You have four realistic choices, and only one gives you the full IPTV experience.

Four ways to get IPTV onto a Roku screen
OptionHow it worksTV guideBest for
M3U player from the Roku storeSearch the store for "M3U" or "IPTV player", add one, paste your playlist linkBasic, sometimes noneCasual live viewing on one TV
Screen mirroringAndroid phones and Windows laptops copy their screen to the RokuWhatever the phone app showsOne show in a pinch
AirPlayAn iPhone or iPad sends video to a compatible Roku modelWhatever the iPhone app showsApple households

Store players differ a lot in quality and appear and disappear, so read recent reviews before adding one. Many accept only an M3U link, not an Xtream Codes login, and few draw a full grid guide. Mirroring ties up your phone, drains its battery and can stutter on busy Wi-Fi. Not every Roku can receive it: some older Roku Express models cannot, and Google Pixel phones cast instead of mirroring. Roku keeps the model list on its screen mirroring help page.

Is IPTV Smarters Pro available for Roku?

No. There is no official IPTV Smarters Pro app for Roku, and no TiviMate either. Both are built for Android, and Smarters also has an Apple version named Smarters Player Lite. If a Roku app shows up with a similar name, be careful: lookalikes are common, and some charge before you can even test them. Never pay for an app that claims to come with channels built in.

If you like the Smarters layout, the cleanest fix is a second device. Get a Google TV device, or one of Amazon's sticks that still run Fire OS (the 4K Plus and the 4K Max), connect it to the Roku TV, and the real app runs on the same screen with its own small remote. Avoid Amazon's 4K Select and the newer HD stick: both use Vega OS, which cannot install these apps either. Our page on the best IPTV player for a Firestick explains which models still can.

What are the setup steps on a Roku TV?

First choose your route, then follow the short version below.

  1. Check your model. Open Settings > System > About to see which Roku you have, so you know whether mirroring and AirPlay are possible.
  2. Store app route. Press Home, open the store, search "M3U", add a player with recent good reviews, and type in the playlist address exactly as your provider wrote it.
  3. Mirroring route. On the Roku, set Settings > System > Screen mirroring to Prompt or Always allow, then start mirroring from your phone's quick settings.
  4. Stick route. Connect the stick to an empty HDMI input, change the TV source, and set up the IPTV app there as you would on any TV.

Each route is covered in detail in our Roku IPTV setup guide. For the stick route, use the Fire TV Stick walk-through or the Google TV and Android TV steps.

King IPTV provides an M3U link for Roku players as well as an Xtream Codes login for other apps. Try the Roku route during the 24-hour free trial; if the store app feels thin, the same trial login works on a stick, so you can compare both before you pay. Live Chat can help with either, in English or French.

More Roku questions

Will casting from my phone work with a Roku?

Sometimes. Roku accepts casting from apps that build in a Roku cast button, screen mirroring from many Android phones and Windows PCs, and AirPlay on compatible models. Most IPTV player apps have no Roku cast button, so mirroring or AirPlay is usually the way. Expect a small delay, and keep the phone plugged in, since mirroring uses a lot of battery.

Is it worth buying a streaming stick for my Roku TV?

For most daily viewers, yes. A Fire TV Stick running Fire OS or a Google TV device costs far less than a new TV, adds full IPTV apps with a guide and catch-up, and plugs into a spare HDMI port. Your Roku TV keeps all its own apps. You simply switch the input when you want IPTV.

Will a Roku and another TV both work on one IPTV plan?

Yes, as long as your plan allows enough screens at the same time. The same login can sit on the Roku app, a stick and a phone. What counts is how many play at once. King IPTV lets you choose between 1 and 5 screens, and our answer on using IPTV on several devices explains how the limit works.
