IPTV Questions The basics
How does IPTV actually work?
What happens between the TV channel and your screen?
Every channel goes through five stages on its way to you, and the trip is over in seconds.
Capture
The provider's headend pulls in the original feed of each channel, for example from a satellite downlink or a direct fibre link, and turns it into digital video if it is not digital already.
Compress
Raw HD video is far too big to send as is. An encoder shrinks it with a codec such as H.264 or the newer H.265 (HEVC). After compression an HD channel needs roughly 4 to 8 Mbps, and a 4K channel 15 to 25 Mbps.
Package
The compressed stream is sliced into segments a few seconds long and listed in a small playlist file. Two common formats are MPEG-TS and HLS, the format Apple documents for HTTP Live Streaming.
Deliver
Servers send the segments to every viewer who requests them, often from several cities at once through a content delivery network. On the public internet each viewer gets a separate copy of the stream.
Play
Your app downloads segments slightly ahead of time, the device's video chip decodes them, and the picture appears. Change channel and the app simply fetches a different playlist.
How does IPTV get its channels?
Before a provider can stream a channel, it has to receive that channel's feed from somewhere. Who supplies the feed, and on what terms, differs from one service to the next. It affects how stable the picture is, and it sits at the centre of the legal debate explained in our article on IPTV and Canadian law (general information, not legal advice). For the record, King IPTV itself neither hosts nor stores any content. The streams are supplied by third-party providers; our role is to give you access to them and to support you technically.
How does an IPTV app work?
Think of an IPTV app as a video player with a TV guide attached. It holds no channels of its own. When you sign in, it contacts your provider's server and builds your lineup from three kinds of data:
- The channel list: names, logos, categories and a stream address for each channel.
- Guide data (EPG): the schedule, usually an XMLTV file, matched to each channel through an ID code.
- Account details: the expiry date and how many screens may play at once.
An Xtream Codes login lets the app request these pieces one menu at a time, which is why movies, series and catch-up show up in tidy sections. An M3U link works differently: the app downloads one long text playlist and fetches the guide from a separate EPG address. Read about M3U links versus Xtream Codes logins if your app asks which one you have.
When you press OK on a channel, the app opens that stream address and starts filling its buffer. That short loading circle after a channel change is the buffer filling up.
Is telecom IPTV different from internet IPTV?
Yes. Both use internet protocol, but one travels on a private road and the other on the public highway.
| Feature | Managed IPTV (phone company) | Internet IPTV (over the top) |
|---|---|---|
| Network | The provider's own closed network to your home | The public internet, through any provider |
| Example | Bell Fibe TV and other telecom TV packages | Independent IPTV services and live TV apps |
| How streams are sent | Often multicast: one stream shared by many homes | Unicast: one stream per viewer |
| Equipment | Receiver rented from the provider | Hardware you own: a TV, stick, box, phone or laptop |
| Where it works | Only at the service address | Wherever there is internet |
| Bandwidth | Reserved for TV on that network | Shared with everything else in your home |
The trade-off is simple. Managed IPTV controls more of the path, so it rarely stutters, but it costs more and stays at one address. Internet IPTV is cheaper and portable, and its quality depends on your home connection and the provider's servers.
Why does IPTV buffer or run behind live TV?
Buffering means the video is reaching your device slower than the app is playing it. The reserve the app keeps lasts only a few seconds, so if your connection drops below the stream's bitrate for longer than that, the reserve empties and the spinning circle appears. The usual culprits:
- Wi-Fi that is weak, crowded or blocked by walls and floors.
- Evening rush, when everyone on your street streams at once.
- A stick or TV short on memory after weeks without a restart.
- Busy provider servers during a big game.
An Ethernet cable, a restart and a lower-quality version of the channel solve most cases. The full checklist is in our guide to fixing buffering and freezing.
The same reserve explains the delay. Each segment must be made, sent and stored before it plays, so internet streams usually trail cable or an antenna by several seconds, sometimes half a minute. During a playoff game, a text from a friend can beat the goal to your screen.
More about how IPTV runs
How many gigabytes does an hour of IPTV take?
In HD, expect somewhere between 1.5 and 3 GB per hour, and about 7 GB or more for 4K, depending on the channel and the app. A home that streams four hours of HD daily can pass 300 GB in a month. Unlimited home internet is the safe choice, because a capped plan can run out well before the month ends.
Will IPTV keep playing if the internet goes down?
Only for a few seconds. Once the app's reserve is used up, the picture freezes until the connection returns. IPTV apps stream rather than download, so there is nothing stored to fall back on. Some apps can record a program onto a USB stick or internal storage, and those recordings still play offline.
How does King IPTV deliver its channels?
Your login is delivered as Xtream Codes details, as an M3U playlist URL, or, on MAG and Formuler boxes, as a portal linked to the MAC address. Any compatible player then pulls the 50,000+ live channels, the guide and catch-up from our servers, which use backup streams for busy channels. Before paying, a no-cost trial day shows how it behaves on your line.
Watch the whole chain work at home
The 24-hour trial shows how fast channels open, how the guide loads and how steady streams stay on your internet. Plans from $18 CAD if you keep it.
